Green Space and Walking Routes
Ottawa has a more developed parks system than many towns its size. The city lists Forest Park, Kanza Park, City Park, Heritage Park, Freedom Park, Walton Park, Orlis Cox Field, the Goppert parks, and the Prairie Spirit Rail Trail among its core public spaces.
Forest Park
Forest Park is the most feature-rich park in town, with a municipal pool, lit tennis courts, horseshoe courts, basketball, ball fields, disc golf, playgrounds, restroom facilities, and reservable shelters. It is one of the best single stops if you want a park that offers more than just a short walk.
Neighborhood and Trail Options
Heritage Park adds a short walking track and a 6-hole disc golf course, while Freedom Park sits next to the pickleball courts and functions well for a quick neighborhood stop. For longer walking or biking, the Prairie Spirit Rail Trail runs through Ottawa with a paved in-town segment and trailhead access.
Before You Go
- Carry water during warmer months.
- Check conditions after storms or heavy rain, especially if you plan to continue beyond town on the trail system.
- Use the City parks page if you need shelter reservations, park maps, or current parks contact information.
