The Ottawa City Commission voted June 3 to hold a public hearing on the Knights Inn at 1641 S. Main St., the motel at 17th and Main that the April 13 tornado badly damaged. At the hearing, July 22 at 7 p.m., commissioners will consider condemning the buildings and ordering them repaired or demolished.
Property Improvement Partner Keith Hodges said several buildings lost their roofs and are exposed to the weather, and debris has blown past the security fence. No one has taken out repair or demolition permits, and KDHE requires an asbestos inspection before demolition can begin.
Hodges said the owner has cooperated and plans to demolish the buildings but is waiting on an insurance claim. The owner and the public can speak at the hearing.
