The Ottawa City Commission voted unanimously on July 22 to condemn the Knights Inn at 1641 S. Main St., the motel at 17th and Main wrecked by the April 13 tornado. The resolution orders the buildings repaired or torn down.

Property Improvement Partner Keith Hodges told commissioners several buildings have no roofs and sit open to the weather, with unbraced walls. No repairs or demolition had begun. Before the hearing, Hodges told KOFO the owner's insurer was slowing things down.

KOFO reported that the insurer has settled with the owner. Demolition will start once an asbestos test is done, and the owner's representative said the property will be sold afterward. If the work stalls, the city can demolish the buildings and charge the cost to the property.
