Franklin County is getting $1.8 million from KDOT's Off-System Bridge Program to replace the Indiana Road bridge over Appanoose Creek, northeast of Pomona. The bridge, about 2 miles north and 4 1/2 miles east of town, dates to 1939 and has deteriorated badly in recent years.
The program is awarding $20.5 million for 16 projects statewide in federal fiscal year 2028, and the Indiana Road bridge was picked from more than 80 applications.
It is one of two bridge projects the county has under way. The other is on John Brown Road west of Princeton, where the 96-year-old bridge collapsed after heavy rain in late April. Public Works Director Jeff Welton updated county commissioners on that bridge on June 10.
