The Ottawa City Commission voted 4–1 on April 1 to keep flood insurance only on the police station and the main building at the wastewater treatment plant. Coverage on every other city building is being dropped.
City staff pointed to Ottawa's accredited levee system and to the city's claims record. Since 2018 the city has paid about $650,000 in flood premiums and recovered about $13,000 in claims. Staff also noted that most cities protected by accredited levees carry no flood insurance.
The two buildings that keep coverage are the ones the city considers essential for public safety and its regulatory duties. The change lowers the yearly premium from $68,122 to $37,963, a savings of $30,159.
