The Ottawa City Commission on July 22 unanimously condemned an apartment complex at 1017 S. Ash St.

Property Improvement Partner Keith Hodges said each of the lot's two buildings has had a fire in the past four years, and both are unsafe. The two-unit north building is empty and damaged beyond repair, while three of five units in the south building are occupied. No permits have been sought.

City code calls for demolition when repairs would cost more than half a structure's value, and the county appraises the buildings at $11,710. The owner said he was told to stay off the property after a fire, which staff disputed. KOFO reported he has 30 days to show progress. Mayor Zach Clayton asked for information on tenants' rights.
